One of Intel's longest serving executives, Pat Gelsinger, is leaving the company for networking firm EMC, according to reports.

Gelsinger is the senior vice president of Intel's enterprise group and one of the company's best known figures. He's been with the chipmaker for 30 years and has filled a selection of senior roles, including chief technology officer and head of the company's research department. He was the chief architect of the company's 486 processors and became the company's youngest ever vice-president at the age of 32.

Gelsigner's departure will precipitate a shake-up of senior Intel management. Sean Maloney, the company's head of sales and marketing, will now oversee all of Intel's major chip divisions, according to a report in the New York Times.

Dadi Perlmutter, who currently looks after the mobile division, will now oversee engineering across the entire business.

Intel has declined to comment on the speculation.

Gelsinger isn't the only long-serving executive to take his leave from the company this year. Former Intel CEO and chairman Craig Barrett stepped down as a member of the Intel board in May after more than 35 years with the firm.
