Palm is hoping to cash in on the success of the Palm Pre with a new, slimmed-down handset called the Pixi.

The Palm Pre was the first handset to sport the company's new WebOS operating system. The follow-up device follows largely the same formula as the first, although it's being pitched at younger consumers.

The Pixi is both longer and thinner than its predecessor, measuring 55mm x 111mm x 10.85mm. It retains both the 2.6in mutlitouch screen and full QWERTY keyboard of the Pre, and offers 8GB of internal storage.

There's no Wi-Fi option, although the phone does offer Bluetooth and integrated GPS radios.

Palm is keen to stress to the social-networking features of the phone, with the arrival of a new Facebook application, as well as integration with Google Talk, Yahoo Messenger and the business networking site, LinkedIn.

To underline its youth credentials, the handset will also come with a limited edition set of designer cases.

Palm says the device will go on sale in the US before Christmas, and although the company says it plans to bring the device to Europe eventually, there's no specific confirmation yet on a UK launch. The Pre is set to launch in the UK later this autumn.

Pricing has yet to be announced.
