Fujitsu has crammed a Blu-ray drive and Core 2 Duo processor in a PC that’s only 50mm tall and that allegedly uses a mere 19W of power when idle.

The latest edition to the Esprimo Q series, the Q1500, boasts one of the most powerful specifications that we’ve seen from a small form factor PC. The high-end model, which was on display at Berlin’s IFA trade show, featured a 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, a 320GB Western Digital hard disk and 4GB of DDR2 RAM alongside a slot-loading Blu-ray reader.

Intel’s GMA 4500HD graphics chip and Gigabit Ethernet completes the specification, with 802.11b/g/n wireless cards and Bluetooth available as optional extras.

The chassis itself is 165mm wide and 50mm tall, with the finished unit weighing just 1.7kg. Windows Vista Home Premium will be included with the new machine, with Fujitsu planning to upgrade to Windows 7 after its October 22 launch.

Cut-down versions of the Q1500 will also be available featuring DVD writers, smaller hard disks, less RAM and weaker processors – including, if rumours are to be believed, one of Intel’s new CULV processors, some of which will also be used in Samsung’s new X-Series laptops.

Fujitsu has revealed that prices for the Q1500 will start at €699 for the lesser versions, with costs obviously rising for the more powerful models – although specific prices haven’t yet been revealed.

The Q1500 is a far cry from the type of cut-down SFF system we’re used to seeing, with high-end machines inevitably cutting back on some areas of their specifications and low-end machines limited to the meagre performance of Intel’s Atom processors.

Rest assured, we’ll be putting the Q1500 through its paces as soon as we can get one of the little blighters into the PC Pro Labs.
