Samsung will begin shipping laptops with OLED screens in 2010, according to a company executive.

Speaking at the launch of its X-Series laptop range in Berlin, Kyu Uhm, head of worldwide sales and marketing for Samsung's Computing Division was questioned on when the display technology was likely to find its way into laptops.

"Samsung is the biggest OLED manufacturer. And as soon as the technology's commercially available for laptops we'll adopt it," he said. "Probably sometime in the third quarter next year."

If the prediction holds, it means we could be seeing the first Samsung OLED laptops hitting the shelves as early as next July. This is good news because OLED screens produce brighter images, consume less power, and are thinner than liquid crystal displays because they do not need backlights.

This means OLED-equipped laptops should be lighter, thinner and benefit from improved battery life. They're also likely to be considerably more expensive than traditional laptops, given the high manufacturing costs of OLED.

Samsung already uses OLED technology in its MP3 players, and is beginning to introduce it into smartphones.

I am so looking forward to OLED taking over from conventional screens. This could help bring down the costs for other purposes. I would expect Apple to be big users of OLED screens, especially if it allows them to shrink devices even smaller.
