Nokia's Booklet 3G gets official netbook spec

Nokia has revealed details of its "not a netbook" Booklet 3G - and it looks very similar to a netbook.

The mobile phone giant revealed the Booklet 3G last month, but piqued our curiosity by claiming the device was "not a netbook. It's a mini-laptop - it offers a great deal more spec-wise than the average netbook."

However, the official spec list seems to have put paid to that, revealing that the Booklet 3G will feature a 10.1in display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor, 1GB of RAM and 120 GB hard disk.

There are a few features that elevate it beyond the usual netbook crowd, including an accelerometer, 1,280 x 720 display and A-GPS. At first glance, none of these seem to justify the £500 price tag, but Nokia claims we're paying for convenience.

The Booklet 3G gets rid of the cables and chargers, and I'm looking forward to leaving the spaghetti at home, like I do with my phone

"The 12 hour battery life is significantly better than the average Atom-based PC as even the top 10 Atom-based PCs claim an average of up to eight hours," a spokesperson told PC Pro.

"The Booklet 3G gets rid of the cables and chargers, and I'm looking forward to leaving the spaghetti at home, like I do with my phone. There's also the 3G/HSPA, A-GPS and the chassis's made from a single piece of machined aluminium."

We're still not convinced, but the A-GPS could certainly come in useful for plotting your position using the integrated Ovi Maps, and Nokia says the device will have WLAN, WWAN Wi-Fi and 3G connections.

One other interesting revelation is that the company will be offering a choice of either Windows 7 Starter, Home Premium or Professional editions. As Nokia has yet to reveal a launch date, this means that we won't be getting it before 22 October - the date Windows 7 is officially released.
