In preparation for the launch of the 3GHz Pentium 4 this Thursday, Intel has rejigged its processor pricing.
For the existing Pentium 4 processors, the top-of-the-range 2.8GHz model has now been cut from $508 to $401. The 2.66GHz and 2.6GHz offerings have also both been cut to $305, from $401.
As for the low-end Celeron, which is targeted at budget desktop systems, there are four changes. The recent 2GHz model has been reduced from $103 to $83. The 1.8GHz model is cut from $149 to $69 and the 1.7GHz and 1.4GHz models now cost $54.
In the wake of Intel's move, AMD has reportedly lowered its pricing for low-end and medium-range Athlon XP processors. According to Digitimes.com, AMD has moved to cut the price of its 2100+, 2000+, 1900+, 1800+ and 1700+ processors by as much as 40 per cent.
The company, however, has not yet officially announced the new prices.
