Microsoft has released Service Pack 1 for the embedded version of Windows XP, a form of the operating system designed to run in embedded devices.

The announcement was made at the third annual Microsoft Windows Embedded Developer Conference in Las Vegas.

Possible applications for the embedded OS include home gateway systems, various thin client systems (such as shop terminals and the like) and set-top boxes.

New features in the SP1 release include more support for Microsoft's .Net Framework, expanded foreign-language support and embedded-specific functionality such as remote booting, a System Deployment Image (SDI) manager and diskless operation. IPv6 and USB 2.0 are now also supported.

Windows XP SP1 was released early in September. Microsoft was committed to making new Windows XP Embedded technologies available within 90 days of the client release.

More info and an evaluation version of Windows XP Embedded with SP1 can be found on the Microsoft Web site.
