Mobile devices turn up the heat

Consumer-oriented handhelds, such as Palm's £75 Zire, are expected to do well in the short term, said Jones, as Palm and Sony target first-time customers with devices marketed more as a replacement filofax. Longer-term though, he expects mobile phones with PIM (personal information manager) functionality to kill off these. People will choose to have one device able to offer both voice services and PIM functions rather than two.
