New content served up by Microsoft

Posted on 7 Oct 2002 at 16:04

Microsoft formally unveils Content Management Server (CMS) 2002, as part of its .Net Enterprise Server family.

The Content Server software provides a way to customise the delivery of information to users according to individual preferences. This includes serving content over the Web.

As well as increased integration with Microsoft Office and XML Web Services, there are - almost inevitably for any new Microsoft product release - closer ties to the development environment Visual Studio .NET. A gallery of pre-built and modifiable server controls are intended to help developers build Web sites involving managed content.

'As companies expand their business practices over the Internet, an integrated e-business infrastructure connecting people to the information they need will be more important than ever,' said David Kiker, general manager of eBusiness Servers at Microsoft.

The announcement about (CMS 2002) will be made today at the Microsoft Exchange Conference in Anaheim, California, but release code is not expected to be generally available before the end of the year. The cost, per CPU, will be around $42,000.

More info can be found at microsoft.com/cmserver/.

With BizTalk Server 2002 and Commerce Server 2002 already released, the next major server release in this area will be Windows .Net Server. As we reported last week, a final release candidate of .Net Server will be appearing this month, with the official release at the start of 2003. This features increased security, improved rollback support and error reporting, as well as improved Web Service support.
