Two new Xeon processors from Intel, for server and workstation platforms.

The new offerings are for dual processing systems, such as are popular for applications in financial analysis, mechanical and electrical design and 3D modelling.

Running at 2.8 and 2.6GHz respectively, the new Xeons are built on Intel's 0.13-micron process and carry 512Kb of level two Advanced Transfer Cache. Intel's chipset for dual processing Xeon-based workstations is the Intel 860.

In terms of pricing, the 2.8GHz Xeon costs $562 and the 2.6GHz $433, based on 1,000 unit quantities.

The models are coming to market three months earlier than planned and Intel is claiming 'great momentum' for the Xeon platform. 'We're designing and manufacturing our enterprise products faster than anticipated and expect a number of OEMs and channel distributors to ship systems based on these products this week and throughout the year,' said Lisa Hambrick, a director of Enterprise Processor Marketing at Intel.
