The deluge of new processors shows no sign of abating as AMD updates its workstation and server offering, the Athlon MP.

The Athlon MP (Multi Processor) is AMD's dual-processor offering for heavyweight computing. Indeed, one of the uses of the Athlon MP - by the company Rhythm & Hues - was to drive the rendering of the movie Scooby Doo. More prosaically, for server use, the Athlon MP processors are targeted at email, file, print and networking applications - the bread and butter corporate applications requiring reliability and stability.

For use with the AMD-760 MPX chipset, the new Athlon MP 2200+ will is compatible with both Windows and Linux platforms. It operates at a frequency of 1.8 GHz, compared to the 1.73GHz of the 2100+.

The new Athlon MP processor 2200+ is priced at $224, based on 1,000-unit quantities, and you can expect systems featuring the new model to be available immediately.

It is the third and final Athlon processor type - along with the mobile and desktop Athlon offerings - to benefit from a 0.13-micron copper process technology squeezing more transistors onto smaller chips using the advanced manufacturing process. From this, AMD claims that the new Athlon MP 2200+ provides 12 per cent power reduction over previous MP processors.
