According to the latest market research, Intel has gained market share worldwide for PC processors.

The chip giant has seen its share of the market grow by two per cent, reports the New York Times, while AMD's share has declined by a similar margin. This is all according to figures produced by the market research firm Mercury Research.

Mercury's survey indicates that Intel's share of the market has grown, since its last quarterly report, from 80.8 per cent to 82.8 per cent.

AMD, meanwhile, has lost 2.6 per cent of the market over the three months, down to 15.6 per cent. A year ago - according to Mercury's figures - AMD had 21.8 per cent of the market.

The figures, however, include the sales of processors for Microsoft's Xbox. Take the gaming console out of the equation and the picture changes to an 81.7 per cent split for Intel and 16.5 per cent for AMD.

According to analysts at Mercury, the scale of Intel's manufacturing and its spread across a variety of markets make it better able to weather the recession and ensuing price wars than its smaller rival. Both companies announced significant price cuts at the end of May.
