Toshiba finally succumbs to Blu-ray

Toshiba has finally decided to support Blu-ray, almost two years after the format scored a decisive victory in the HD war.

Toshiba was practically the last man standing behind the rival HD DVD format, which suffered an embarrassing defeat on the eve of the 2008 CES show.

Warner Bros, the last major movie studio to support HD DVD defected to Blu-ray, leading the HD DVD Association to cancel its press conference and Toshiba with a stand full of soon-to-be obselete equipment.

Clearly wary of getting its fingers burnt twice, Toshiba has now decided Blu-ray has matured enough to apply for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association.

"Toshiba aims to introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year," Toshiba says in a company statement.

"Details of the products, including the timing of regional launches, are now under consideration. We will make announcements in due course."
