Plastic Logic's eagerly anticipated A4-sized eBook reader will hit the UK in late 2010 or early 2011, the company has announced.

The Cambridge-based company has been recieving a lot of attention for its Kindle rival which differentiates itself from the competition with its "intelligent plastic" flexible screen.

The majority of today's eBook readers use E Ink technology to display text and images, which mimics the effect of words on paper, but is slow and costly to produce.

Plastic Logic claims it has spent £120 million and ten years developing its alternative technology, which it claims is considerably cheaper to produce and also much tougher.

The first device features a generous 8.5 x 11in touchscreen and wide-ranging document support and is being aimed at business users.

The company plans to release the device in the US at the beginning of next year for $299 - the same price as the Kindle.

In a separate announcement iRex, one of the eBook reader pioneers with the iLiad, has confirmed it's lining up a consumer eBook reader with an 8.1in touchscreen and 3G connection. The reader is slated for release in November. No pricing details have been announced.
