Nikon shows off "world's first projector camera"

Nikon has released its intriguing Coolpix S1000pj, the first compact camera with a built-in projector.

The full-colour LED projector can cast an image of between 5in and 40in at a maximum distance of two metres, according to Nikon. However, a brightness of only 10 lumens means a darkened room is likely to be a necessity.

The projector also takes a toll on the rechargeable lithium-ion battery, with Nikon claiming it will likely hold out for just an hour of continuous use. However, that's likely to be an interesting hour with the camera packing an in-built editing suite allowing you to create photo slide shows with transitions, music and effects.

Putting the projector to one side, the Coolpix S1000pj also boasts a 12.1 megapixel sensor with ISO 6400 sensitivity and a 5x wide-angle zoom lens. There's a 2.7in LCD display and the 36MB of internal memory can be bolstered by either an SD or SDHC memory card.

The camera will be available in either black or silver for £400 from 9 September.
