Sony readies two new eBook readers

Reports suggest that Sony is ready to bolster its eBook-reader range with two new models.

Last week, leaked user manuals hinted that Sony was preparing to launch two new eBook devices, however, details were scant. Sony Insider now claims to have unearthed full details of the two new readers, though Sony is remaining quiet.

The most basic model is the PRS300-RC Reader Pocket Edition which features a 5in E Ink screen and lightweight case. There's 512MB of inbuilt memory, double that of the PRS 505, and a battery that's reportedly good for around 7,500 page turns, enough to see you comfortably through the Austen back catalogue.

Early reports suggest it will go on sale for $199 in the US, which could make it a tough sell next to Amazon's Kindle - which offers double the storage and a Wi-Fi connection for the same price.

The second model, dubbed the PRS600-SC Reader Touch Edition, looks to be a straight refresh of the PRS 700, which has mysteriously disappeared from Sony's online shop. The standout feature of the PRS600 is the 6in 800 x 600 touchscreen that allows users to turn the page by swiping their finger across the screen and highlight text by tapping it with a finger.

There's also a virtual keyboard, dictionary and option to annotate using a stylus. As with the PRS300, there's 512MB of inbuilt memory at an estimated price of $299.

We're waiting to hear back from Sony on whether we can expect either of these models to make its way to the UK.
