Conservative leader David Cameron has launched a lewd attack on micro-blogging service Twitter.

Appearing on Absolute Radio, the Tory leader was asked by presenter Christian O'Connell whether he used Twitter.

"Politicians do have to think about what we say," Cameron said, seemingly without irony. "The trouble with Twitter, the instantness of it - too many twits might make a twat."

Cameron's outburst might be considered a little rich, considering this is a man who's jumped on every technology bandwagon that's passed his web browser, not least the excruciatingly titled WebCameron - the Conservative leader's own online TV channel.

He also appears to have forgotten that the Conservative Party has its own Twitter account, although the "twats" in charge of that have generously linked to the radio interview on this morning's tweets.

Cameron's outburst comes in the same week as the Cabinet Office offered guidance to Government departments on how to use Twitter.

Bizarrely, insulting readers wasn't included in the advice.

Barry is a twit

It's hard to argue with the idea that politicians do have to be careful what they say and that technologies like twitter can encourage off the cuff expression. Who couldn't name several famous people who've gotten in trouble with "twits?" Who hasn't themselves?

Similarly, you have to squint pretty hard to read a normal observation about twitter into an'insult to readers.'

Is it because Cameron is a conservative and we just don't like anything "they" say? Or is Barry Collins just a thin-skinned twat?
