Internet Explorer to receive emergency patch

Posted on 27 Jul 2009 at 09:07

Microsoft will break its Patch Tuesday release cycle in order to deliver emergency patches for Internet Explorer and Visual Studio developer suite.

The Redmond-based company typically releases all its patches on the second Tuesday of every month, allowing administrators time to rollout the updates.

However, Microsoft clearly believes these patches can't wait, making this only the third time in over a year-and-a half that the company has broken its release cycle.

As is more typical from Microsoft, the advanced notice gives little information about the vulnerabilities, beyond noting that the Internet Explorer patch is rate as critical, its highest warning.

The fix for Visual Studio developer suite is listed as important - the second highest category.

"While we can't go into specifics about the issue prior to release, we can say that the Visual Studio bulletin will address an issue that can affect certain types of applications," notes Microsoft.

"The Internet Explorer bulletin will provide defense-in-depth changes to Internet Explorer to help provide additional protections for the issues addressed by the Visual Studio bulletin. The Internet Explorer update will also address vulnerabilities rated as Critical that are unrelated to the Visual Studio bulletin that were privately and responsibly reported."
