iPhone internet access down

iPhone owners have lost connectivity to the internet due to a technical fault, according to network provider O2.

The O2 Twitter feed carried the following message at 3:20pm this afternoon: "We're having a problem with Pay Monthly internet access, this will affect MMS too. Sorry - we're working to fix this ASAP."

Subsequent messages confirmed that the problem would affect iPhone owners on monthly contracts. The issue appears to be affecting a particular access point name (APN) for those pay monthly customers, while pre-pay customers who go through a different APN are unaffected.

O2 is urging people not to manually alter their APN.

O2 customers in the PC Pro office - using both iPhones and other handsets - are currently having difficulties getting online.

O2's network problems come amid reports that Apple is considering allowing Orange and T-Mobile to sell the iPhone 3G in the UK. T-Mobile is reportedly buying up stocks of unlocked iPhones to appease customers who are deserting the network in favour of O2.
