AMD extends the Athlon XP

The Athlon XP 2200+ is AMD's latest high performance desktop processor, designed to carry the more demanding multimedia applications.

While being compatible with AMD's existing Socket A infrastructure, the processor's performance is delivered from lower power and a smaller die size.

Keen as ever to expose the 'megahertz myth' - valuing the performance of processors by headline clock-speed alone - AMD stresses improved user benefits for the new Athlon. 'AMD continues to focus on offering high-performance end user benefits such as faster rendering times, better database performance and smoother video and audio editing,' said Ed Ellett, VP of marketing for AMD's Computation Products Group.

The Athlon XP features QuantiSpeed architecture, 384Kb of on-chip cache and supports the advanced 266MHz front-side bus. They are manufactured - at AMD's Fab 30 in Dresden - using a 0.13-micron copper process technology.

The new processor is priced at $241 based, on 1,000-unit quantities.

In terms of systems featuring the XP 2200+, you can already expect to find the XP 2200+ in Fujitsu-Siemens and it will be coming in Compaq Presarios and HP Pavilions.
