11% of Brits never make calls on their mobile

More than one in ten Brits never make a voice call from their mobile phone, according to new research.

The survey by Lightspeed Research found that 13% of American phone owners and 11% of Brits never make calls.

In fact, only just over a third of Brits make a voice call at least once a day, with text messaging proving a much more popular way of communicating - 49% said they sent at least one SMS message per day.

Three out of ten Brits claim their mobile phone is "an essential part of their daily life", with two thirds revealing that they leave their phone on overnight. Only 14% of those leave the phone on silent.

GPS is the feature most Brits want to see in their next handset, with 43% expressing a desire for phone-based sat nav.

However, we're none too keen on the idea of paying for public transport using our mobile handsets, like they do in Japan.

Many of the survey respondents were worried that turning their phone into an Oyster card would make them a greater target for theft and are worried about handing even more data about themselves over to the phone networks.
