Cable and Wireless promises network upgrade

Cable and Wireless has announced that it will expand its Multi-Service Platform (MSP) to continental Europe, bringing bandwidth of up to 1Gbit/sec.

The provider already has a full fibre network throughout Europe, and finished rolling out the MSP across the UK in 2006, as well as parts of India and the Middle East.

The new additions to the MSP will use the fibre connections that already exist, but make use of hardware upgrades to increase bandwidth. The company is using Alcatel Lucent 7750 service routers to increase the throughput of its existing infrastructure.

"The roll-out of the MSP across Ireland and continental Europe will see another piece of our global IP network fall into place," says Nick Lambert, managing director of global markets at Cable & Wireless.

"Our large multinational and carrier customers need the very best telecommunication solutions across all their locations and this is exactly what we will provide them," he adds.

Cable and Wireless also claims that the new hardware will pave the way for future upgrades, with some elements of its MSP infrastructure being ready for up to 20Gbits/sec.
