Windows 7: not just "a Vista that works"

A leaked memo from US retailer Best Buy has revealed the price of Windows 7 upgrades - and a rather indiscrete insult at Windows Vista.

The memo, which explains how the company is handling the launch of Windows 7, starts with a dig at Microsoft's current offering.

"Microsoft is launching Windows 7 in mid-October 2009," the memo reads, according to a leak on Engadget. "This new operating system isn't just a 'Vista that works' program - it's a new operating system with improved productivity, functionality and creativity that uses less computer resources."

However, the real juicy details come with the Windows 7 price list. The memo claims the store will be offering "presell" upgrades for Windows 7 from 26 June. They will cost $49.99 (£31.20) for Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade, and $99.99 (£62.41) for the Professional Upgrade.

The retailer has also revealed details of the free upgrade scheme. Anyone who buys a new PC with Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate between 26 June and launch day will receive a free upgrade to Windows 7.

People who buy standalone versions of the OS will also qualify for the upgrades.

Microsoft has yet to make an official announcement on Windows 7 pricing.
