Microsoft unveils Zune HD - but will we ever get one?

Microsoft has unveiled a new touchscreen version of its Zune media player - but once again it appears the device will be rooted to the US.

The new Zune HD comes with an OLED touchscreen, which offers a 480x272 resolution. It's clearly Microsoft's (somewhat belated) reply to the iPod touch, but offers a smattering of features not found on Apple's flagship media player.

The standout feature is built-in HD Radio, which is essentially the US alternative to DAB. HD Radio allows stations to simultaneously broadcast digital and analog signals, and carries data such as traffic reports and song/artist information alongside the audio.

HD Radio isn't supported in the UK, making it highly unlikely the Zune HD will ever be sold on this side of the Atlantic. Microsoft has long promised to ship its Zune devices overseas, but has so far failed to deliver.

Microsoft plans to integrate the new Zune device with its Xbox 360 console, allowing console owners to download video and television content to their device.

The Zune HD has an optional docking station with HDMI output, allowing owners to plug the device into a HD TV and playback content at 720p quality.

The new Zune will also include an internet browser for the first time, which Microsoft says is "optimised for multitouch functionality".

The device will go on sale in the autumn; pricing details haven't been announced.
