Around a 100 Tesco shops have been closed, after routine maintenance went awry.
The glitch was first spotted early Monday morning, and prevented tills from accepting all types of payment, including cash.
In a somewhat ironic twist, the notoriously temperamental self-service tills remained unaffected.
The glitch meant that around 100 Tesco stores, including the one that keeps the staff of PC Pro afloat, had to be closed.
A spokesperson for the shop confirmed that there were problems in shops across the country, but was unable to confirm the exact nature of the glitch. He suggested it was probably the result of a software update rolled out on Sunday evening.
"We've had a problem with a software update, but we're working hard to get it all up and running again. Shouldn't be too much longer," the spokesperson told PC Pro.
Tesco says it will be launching a full inquiry into the incident and publishing details the moment it knows what happened.
