Facebook to offer user data to developers

By Reuters

Facebook is ready to offer third party developers access to user-contributed information, as it seeks to spur the next generation of applications.

The move would allow developers to build apps and services capable of accessing user videos, photos, notes and comments. End users would have to agree to share their data first, however.

Facebook, which has more than 200 million active users worldwide, does not plan to charge for the service.

The company is expected to brief developers on the plan at an event it is hosting for developers at its Palo Alto, California headquarters this afternoon.

Facebook would not comment on the plans.
