AMD will launch a 16-core server processor in 2011, according to a new development roadmap released by the company.

The chip, codenamed Interlagos, will arrive in servers with two to four processor sockets, offering the possibility of 64 cores per system.

We'll first catch sight of this new technology in 2010, with the eight to 12-core Magny-Cours processors. Magny-Cours and Interlagos will officially make up AMD's new Opteron 6000 server series.

Alongside the bump in cores, the chips will also introduce advanced power management features allowing users to manually cap the amount of power that cores can consume and shut off idle ones.

The processors will be created using the 32nm manufacturing method, which AMD says will improve energy efficiency and offer better performance than the 45nm process it currently uses.
