Windows Mobile 6.5 gets release date

Windows Mobile 6.5 will be launched on 11 May, according to a report on the Windows Mobile team blog.

The mobile operating system will be launched at this year's TechEd 2009 - Microsoft's annual event for outlining and explaining the ins and outs of its products to developers and IT Professionals - according to the Windows Mobile blog post.

"Stephanie Ferguson, GM of Business Experiences at Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business is going to deliver the kick-off presentation," says the blog.

"This Tech Ed 2009 session focuses on Windows Mobile 6.5 and is targeted at both IT Professionals and Developers, with a cool demo and an outline of great stuff to come."

Though the OS has now been given a release date, handsets aren't expected to arrive until the second half of the year.

Microsoft unveiled Windows Mobile 6.5 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona back in February, complete with the much-maligned Honeycomb interface. Since then the interface has been dropped in favour of a less rigid-looking display.

The team is also thought to have made a number of other significant tweaks to the interface. This hasn't been enough to stop Steve Ballmer admitting that Windows Mobile 6.5 "isn't the full release we wanted", however.

The first and only release candidate of Windows 7 is also expected to make its appearance in early May.
