Spotify plans open API

Spotify is planning to release an API that will allow users to port Spotify to a variety of different devices.

The API was announced by Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek in an interview with The Guardian.

There have long been rumours that Spotify is working on creating an iPhone client, but it now appears the company was plotting something far more ambitious all along.

"If somebody wants to build Spotify into media centre PCs, or if a company wants to integrate Spotify into TV screens, they can," Ek says in the interview. "Several companies are working on stuff right now - we can't announce anything at the moment, but it's very interesting."

Ek goes on to talk about how offering the API to the community can help spread Spotify: "There are lots of areas where we don't have the resources to develop ourselves. This takes a lot of workload off our backs, and we don't know every way that people want to use the service."

Aside from the news on the API Ek also drops a few other interesting nuggets of information.

He notes that 40,000 new users are signing up to the service every day, and that during the recent security breach just 40 accounts were compromised - most of them belonging to Spotify employees. He says there's no evidence the accounts were ever used for criminal purposes.

We were awaiting a response from Spotify on a possible release date for the API at the time of writing.
