Twitter brings back UK text message updates

Twitter has announced that it's completed a deal with Vodafone to reinstate free text updates for the network's UK customers.

The service was dropped by Twitter in August of 2008, with Twitter co-founder Biz Stone claiming it wasn't "financially viable" due to the cost imposed by the networks.

At the time, he claimed that even limiting updates to 250 per user each week would still cost Twitter $1,000 per year.

However, the two companies now appear to have reached an agreement, though no financial details are being disclosed.

"Anyone in the world can update Twitter via SMS but receiving tweets on your mobile has been restricted to North America," says the Twitter blog. "Today, we're happy to announce an agreement between Vodafone UK and Twitter.

In order to receive updates you'll need to enter your mobile phone number on your Twitter account, and then text the 86444 shortcode to Vodafone to let it know you want to receive updates from the service.
