Canon has added HD video capture to its latest mid-range DSLR, helping the company catch up with rival Nikon's D90.
The Canon EOS 500D captures video in either 1080p, 720p or bog-standard VGA. The camera sports an HDMI port, allowing you to instantly review footage on a HD television.
On the stills side, the 500D sports a new 15.1 megapixel C-MOS sensor, capable of capturing images at 3.4 frames per second.
The camera boasts an ISO range that runs all the way up to 3200, allowing users to shoot in low light conditions without relying on the flash, albeit at the expense of grainy images.
The camera has a 3in LCD screen with Live View mode, which allows you to shoot both stills and video without looking through the viewfinder.
The 500D will go on sale from May, costing £869 for body only, or £969 with the standard 18-55m lens.
