Firefox 3.5 "two to three months away"

Mozilla has confirmed that Firefox 3.5 is at least "two to three months" away, as the trials and tribulations of the browser continue.

Firefox 3.5, originally designated version 3.1, was slated for a release in early 2009, and earmarked as a lightweight update bundling the features that didn't make it into Firefox 3.

However, continuing niggles with the TraceMonkey Javascript rendering engine as well as a fistful of new features - including private browsing - have seen the release date pushed back to make way for further betas.

The company has been cagey on exact release schedules, but Mozilla evangelist Chris Blizzard did admit on his Twitter feed that "Firefox 3.5 will be out once we do one more beta and some release candidates. No dates, but probably two to three months or so."

The new release puts it smack bang in the middle of the browser wars. Internet Explorer 8 is on the cusp of release, Apple has just released the beta of Safari 4 and Google is continuing to make progress with Chrome.
