Apple poised to unveil iPhone 3.0

Apple will next week unveil the third version of its iPhone software.

In an invitation sent to journalists, the company promises to provide a "sneak peek" at the iPhone 3.0 software next Tuesday.

There is much speculation about features that Apple may decided to add to the operating system. The frontrunner is support for Flash, after Adobe dropped heavy hints at last month's Mobile World Congress that it was attempting to expand its reach on smartphones.

Other potential newcomers include support for MMS picture messaging, turn-by-turn GPS directions and support for multiple apps running simultaneously.

The company is also expected to release details of a new software development kit (SDK) for third-party app developers.

Apple's announcement comes as its smartphone rivals are also gearing up to make fresh announcements.

Google has said that a new version of Android, the tweely-named Cupcake, will arrive in April.

Palm is also expected to reveal further features of its new WebOS operating system in a webcast later this month.
