Empire Direct crumbles

Electronics retailer Empire Direct has shut up shop after the company fell into administration.

The company's website and retail stores have been closed immediately, with administrators KPMG inviting "anyone interested in acquiring any part of the business" to contact them immediately.

A statement from the administrators on Empire Direct's website suggests the company ran out of cash or credit to buy new stock. "The business is unable to trade in administration due to low stock levels and operating losses and accordingly the stores have been closed," KPMG claims.

"The administrators are working hard to assess the position for customers who have made payments and not received goods. We will endeavour to contact these customers over the next few weeks."

Customers worried about missing goods are invited to call the helpline on 0871 472 9000.

Empire Direct is far from the only electronics retailer to be suffering in the current economic slide. The Dixons Group last week reported computing sales were down 12% in the crucial Christmas period.
