Samsung unveils 64GB SSD camcorder

Samsung has introduced a new HD camcorder, which it claims is "the world's first to feature an internal 64GB SSD".

The HMX-H106 is the company's new flagship camcorder, and part of its new H-Series, all of which capture 1080i video and feature a 2.2 megapixel CMOS imaging sensor, 10x optical zoom, Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens and Optical Image Stabilization.

They also have a HDMI connection, and the ability to capture 4.7 megapixel photos. Indeed, the camcorders vary only in their capacities, which range from 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB.

Utilising H.264 compression, Samsung claims those capacities should be good for three hours, six hours and an impressive 12 hours respectively.

Unsurprisingly, the company is eulogising a number of significant benefits regarding the move to solid state drives. The lack of moving parts means power consumption could drop by around an eighth of an equivalent hard drive model, good news for the battery.

The chance of mechanical failure is also reduced, as is the size of the device, as the SSD is smaller than a hard drive.

SSDs are also faster meaning the camera will boot up faster and read/write data quicker, a necessity for recording in full HD.

Memory can also be expanded using an SD/SDHC memory card.

The camcorders will begin roll out in April.

Internet television

The new announcements didn't stop at the camcorders, however. Samsung also took the opportunity to unveil a partnership with Yahoo that will see it utilise Yahoo's widget engine in its new line of internet-enabled televisions. The widget engine allows users to simply click an icon on the screen to access internet functions, such as Ebay or social networking sites.

The company is still negotiating with UK content providers, so there's no word yet on which widgets we're likely to see at launch.
