iPhone leaps up Flickr camera rankings

It might be better loved for its slick web browsing and iPod facility, but the iPhone's oft-criticised camera is proving hugely popular with the users of photo-sharing site, Flickr.

The iPhone is the fourth most used camera on Flickr and the most widely-used smartphone camera on the site.

The Apple handset's popularity has shot up since the launch of the iPhone 3G, with the faster data connection making it much easier to upload photos to the Yahoo-owned photo site.

Flickr measures which cameras are most popular amongst its users by stripping the camera's model number from the metadata of photos uploaded to the site.

However, Flickr concedes that it can only glean such data from around two thirds of the photos uploaded to the site and that it's not usually possible with cameraphones.

The most popular camera on the site is the Canon 400D (known as the Digital Rebel XTi in the US), followed by the Canon 350D (Digital Rebel XT), and the Nikon D80. The high-end ESO 40D rounds off the top five.

You can see a detailed breakdown of the stats on Flickr's camera finder.
