Nvidia to supercharge netbooks

Posted on 17 Dec 2008 at 16:59

Nvidia has announced a new netbook platform that combines an Atom chip with a GeForce 9400M.

The Geforce 9400M is currently doing the rounds in Apple's MacBooks, and according to Nvidia can improve the graphics and video transcoding performance of current Intel Atom-powered netbook by around five and ten times, respectively.

Nvidia claims this sort of performance boost is enough to get Call of Duty 4 up to a respectable 25fps to 30fps at 1024x768 resolution, though we'll wait to get one into our labs before believing it wholesale.

Nvidia is making a great play of netbooks soon being able to play 1080p full HD videos, and even running next-gen operating systems such as Snow Leopard and Windows 7, assuming your netbook has the RAM to back it up.

The Ion platform is due to start appearing in mid-2009.
