The former chief executive of Vodafone, Arun Sarin, is in the running to replace Jerry Yang at Yahoo, reports suggest.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Yahoo's directors have begun checking references on a few key candidates, including Sarin.
However, the paper reports that a decision is not expected to be reached until January at the earliest.
The search is being led by a small cabal of Yahoo board members, who will take their shortlist to the full board once it is finalised.
That list is thought to include the names of several executives at leading technology and media companies, though only Sarin has been named.
Sarin announced his departure from Vodafone in May. He became CEO in 2003 and helped the company expand into a number of emerging markets, bolstered by acquisitions in Turkey and India.
Yang agreed to resign as CEO last month after investors criticised him for management missteps regarding the Microsoft bid.
