AMD takes on Atom with Conesus
Posted on 14 Nov 2008 at 10:39
AMD has finally unveiled its Atom rival, dubbed Conesus.
AMD is clearly looking to make a significant impact on Intel's dominance of the netbook market, and Conesus will be built on the same 45nm architecture as its recently revealed Shanghai server processor. The first generation of the processor will be dual core, feature 1MB of cache and support DDR2 RAM.
The processor will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, with full rollout expected in the first half of 2009. A second generation chip, dubbed Geneva, is slated to follow in 2010 and will feature 2MB of cache.
In a separate announcement AMD has delayed the release of its Fusion hybrid processor by two years. The revolutionary processor will combine a graphics processing unit and CPU and was originally due to appear in late 2009. AMD is now targetting a 2011 release date.
