SanDisk touts superfast flash drives

Posted on 6 Nov 2008 at 09:22

SanDisk claims to have developed a new file system for solid-state drives that will boost performance by up to 100 times.

According to the company, the technology, called ExtremeFFS (Flash File System), uses a page-based algorithim to dynamically write data to the drive wherever it is most efficient, rather than locking the logical location of data to its physical space.

SanDisk says the technology will significantly boost random write speeds, one of the few bottlenecks on current SSDs, and improve reliability as drives will no longer constantly write to the same physical space, wearing down some sectors while others remain unused.

The company hopes the new technology will lead to the widespread adoption of solid-state drives in PCs.

SanDisk has not announced any new products that use the technology, but claims they should start appearing in 2009.
