Sony recalls 100,000 laptop batteries

Sony has announced that it is recalling 100,000 laptop batteries, due to a risk of fire hazard.

Sony took the action after 40 cases of overheating were reported, including four cases in which users suffered minor burns, and 21 cases of minor damage from fires and overheating.

The recall affects around 74,000 laptops sold by HP and 14,400 from Toshiba.

Sony is blaming the faulty batteries on factory changes dating back four years, which it believes may have affected the quality of some battery cells.

Other incidents of overheating may have involved a problem with raw materials, the company claims.

The faulty batteries are also used in laptops from Dell, Acer and Lenovo.

The recall is a fraction of a much bigger recall of 9.6 million Sony PC batteries in 2006, which cost the company around $360 million. This recall will have no significant affect on earnings, according to Sony.
