Intel misses EU antitrust deadline

Intel has missed a deadline to respond to EU charges that it paid retailers to refrain from selling computers using chips made by AMD.
The deadline for Intel's response was 17 October, but the processor giant claims it did not respond because it was awaiting the results of an appeal it filed related to the case.
Earlier this month Intel asked the Commission for more time to respond to the charges, and Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy claims the company is simply seeking to expand the evidence available to the Commission for the proceeding.
"This is fundamentally a fairness issue; we simply want to be able to conduct a fair defense," says Mulloy.
The Commission issued charges against Intel in July, alleging the company had paid a retailer to favour computers using its chips over those from rival AMD.
Intel filed an appeal in October with the Court of First Instance in Luxembourg.
The Commission says its antitrust investigation is ongoing, and that there is no deadline for a decision.
