Google Earth stuffed into iPhone
Posted on 27 Oct 2008 at 14:53
Google has released a version of the Google Earth application specially tailored for the iPhone.
The app allows iPhone and iPod touch owners to whizz around the globe using the now familiar swipe, pinch and tap actions used to control the touchscreen devices.
Google Earth also takes advantage of the iPhone's built in accelerometers, allowing users to adjust the viewing angle of the map by tilting the phone.
Beyond the purely cosmetic, Google Earth for iPhone also feature the "My Location" tool which immediately finds your position on the map using the smartphone's GPS. Once done it can also pull up geo-located Wikipedia articles, and pictures from the Panoramio layer.
Google Local Search also gives users the option to search for cities and businesses around the globe.
It's not the smoothest experience over a 3G connection, taking a minute or more to load in the satellite imagery, but for anybody who likes a little eye candy on their iPhone it's a novel experience.
Google Earth is available from the iTunes apps store.
