The week in your words: One ring to rule them all

"It was probably best to avoid any reference to Vista. So many people are skipping this version of Windows to wait for the next that they would probably take a long look at their XP desktop and think "That'll do for another couple of years."'
Which is precisely the thought process that runs through Steve Jobs's head when he peers in his wardrobe every morning.
Jobs: Blu-ray is a "bag of hurt"

Speaking of Steve Jobs, he was busy being hip this week by describing Blu-ray - the technology that managed to win and lose the next-gen format war all at once - as a "bag of hurt". A few suspected ulterior motives from the man in the perpetual polo neck.
"I suppose that translates from 'Blu-ray is a bag of hurt' to "Sony won't give us a massive discount, so screw them'," notes cheysuli with a healthy smattering of well-deserved sarcasm.
gavomatic57 was also perplexed: "Funny, other manufacturers seem to manage it. Comet sell laptops from HP, Fujitsu and Sony with Blu-ray drives. More spec for your money all round too."
Yes, but come on it's not like Apple has a history of badgering massive, competing corporations into doing precisely what it wants, when it wants, how it wants, is it?
pcernie took the comment in a rather kinder light, however: "Blu-ray could still be another one of Sony's failures - though I suspect Jobs isn't being entirely honest about his reasoning... I like the sound of DisplayPort. Though frankly I'm happy with anything that pushes Scart even further into the dustbin of history."
Ah yes, the dustbin of history - now home to the Cheeky Girls, Dan Ackroyd, Microsoft Bob, and very soon, our sobriety.
See you all next week.
