First Look: Open Office 3.0

Posted on 13 Oct 2008 at 11:11

Office contender

One of the large claims made of the latest version of Open Office is OOXML support, which some will find disappointing when importing the latest Office documents and getting less than ideal results. However, it is important to remember that even Office is not OOXML compatible, and that the format is yet to be ratified and finalised. In this way Open Office is ahead of its time, and should be applauded for its efforts rather than criticised for its flaws.

As an open source package these problems will be ironed out as the standard settles down, and this will offer people an easy way to switch between Open and Microsoft Office. Even now, before this important step, the suite is a strong rival to Microsoft's Office package, and one which comes with the advantage of costing absolutely nothing.
