MI6 recruits through Facebook

Posted on 29 Sep 2008 at 09:08

The UK's security service, MI6, has begun recruiting through Facebook.

MI6 has traditionally kept a watchful eye on the nation's universities for its next generation of spies but the agency says it wants to recruit from a wider base.

"The Secret Intelligence Service's open recruitment campaign continues to target wide pools of talent representative of British society today. A number of channels are used to promote job opportunities in the organisation. Facebook is a recent example," says a spokesperson.

The adverts begin in a charmingly nondescript fashion: "Graduates of all ages can develop long-term careers as operational officers, collecting and analysing global intelligence."

However, from these humble beginnings the adverts swiftly ramp up: "A career in world events? Help influence world events, protect the UK. Operational officer roles collecting and analysing global intelligence."

The Facebook ads mark a continuation of the move away from the discrete recruitment style once synonymous with the agency. MI6 now runs newspaper and radio adverts, and allows applicants to apply online.
