World's greenest PC? Not quite

Posted on 24 Sep 2008 at 08:27

It boldly claimed it would deliver the "world's greenest PC". However, PC World has admitted that it will have to settle for being merely environmentally friendly with the launch of its Advent Eco PC.

PC World claims the desktop PC consumes only 25 watts, thanks to its fanless design which dissipates heat through its radiator-like case.

It further establishes its green credentials with a case made out of 75% recycled materials, minimal packaging, and UK assembly to "reduce the environmental impact of distribution."

However, when pressed on whether the Eco PC lives up to its billing as the "world's greenest PC", a PC World spokesman admitted the claim was, well, hot air. The company has compromised on a machine that balanced sufficient processing grunt with energy-efficient components, he claims.

"We truly believe that the Advent Eco PC lives up to its name and we're extremely confident that conscientious consumers looking to invest in a new PC will see the Eco PC as a viable option for their homes," says PC World's senior international buyer, Simon Betts.

The Eco PC packs a T5250 Core 2 Duo Processor, 2GB of RAM and a relatively stingy 160GB hard disk. Despite the modest specs, the machine costs £599 for the PC alone, rising to £699 if you wish to include a 19in AOC N19WB TFT display.

The Eco PC can be bought now from PC World's website.
