Updated: Government "shouldn't pay for fibre"

That's right, according to a Government-commissioned report, the UK doesn't need to download its pornography any faster than it already does and so there's no point investing in fibre. Far better to spend the money on propping up wreckless mortgage lenders, eh?

Brumsta's not impressed. "Only with Government can short-sightedness be measured in tears. "

That comment's so good it should have its own entrance music. And all4nothing, was equally unimpressed.

"Okay, fibre to all homes may admittedly be too great a cost on the taxpayer, simply to get faster broadband, but denying this country fibre-to-the-cabinet is accepting that this country wishes to remain in the 20th century, and not progress into the 21st. Without FTTC, this country will never be able to fully integrate its IT systems and communication systems."

True, but by the same token Sky Net will never be able to take over, either. So there's that.

The news did put a spring in the step of earlybomblight, though.

"Quite right too. Superfast broadband should be paid for by the content providers and big business who will profit from it. Asking the taxpayer to stump up for something that is, when all's said and done, a luxury, is just not on, especially when we have prisons and council houses to build."

Indeed, though we wouldn't put it past the Government to start building prison extensions on council houses. Just something to think about over the weekend.

And speaking of prisons, we're off to the pub to see if we can't end up in one by midnight.

See you all next week.
