Atom successor coming Q3 2009

Posted on 5 Sep 2008 at 12:12

Intel's latest roadmap reveals that its next generation Atom processor will makes its appearance in the third quarter of 2009.

The chip is currently codenamed "Pineview" and according to the roadmap will be available in dual and single core varieties. It will also potentially borrow a few Nehalem innovations, and integrate a DDR2 memory controller and graphics core into the die itself.

It's still unclear whether Pineview will appear in netbooks, however. The dual-core Atom 330 is aimed squarely at desktop machines and it appears likely its successor will follow the same marketing trend.

AMD's roadmap has also been leaked onto the internet, revealing that quad-core Phenom processors based on the Deneb core should be making their appearance early January 2009. The processors will come in clock speeds of 2.8GHz and 3.0GHz, both of which will draw 125W.
