Mobilexpo2001: Siemens wows crowds with SX45 4:52PM, Wednesday 23rd May 2001
The most impressive device at the Mobilexpo 2001 show was a combination mobile phone and PDA from electronics specialists Siemens.

The SX45 is based on Microsoft's PocketPC operating system, is Java compatible and will be able to access the GPRS phone network. The device offers Internet access, allowing the transmission and reception of e-mail on the move and has fax functionality.

Although bulkier than the Trium

Mondo or the Sagem WA 3050, the SX45 is a more sturdy proposition and feels reassuringly robust compared to its flimsier rivals. It also boasts a bright, full-colour touch sensitive screen and has an advanced screen specification that makes it useful for using e-books, viewing still images and playing games. Using a handsfree stereo headset, the SX45 can be used for accessing multimedia content such as MP3 and video files.

The unit has a CompactFlash and MultiMedia Card slot and the device can be connected to a PC via a USB connection. Speaking to the rep from Siemens, an October release date seemed on the cards but a price has yet to be fixed but could be in the £400+ range with tariff.

For an exclusive peak at the SX45, have a look at this QuickTime movie (5.6Mb) taken at the Mobilexpo 2001 show.
